Letchworth RHC at CBBC’s Skate Nation

Over this year’s Easter bank holiday weekend Letchworth Roller Hockey Club were invited to attend a ‘Skate Nation’ event organised by the CBBC children’s television programme. The event was held in Rickmansworth & aimed at getting mixed teams of children & some adults together from skating disciplines to learn a different skating style & compete in a mini tournament. The kids were from many different styles of roller sport clubs including figure, inline, street hockey, roller disco & speed skating.

The Letchworth coaches first put on a surprise demonstration game with two players & a goalie in each team for five minutes to show what our style is like & how fast it can be.

After the demo it was time to get the teams kitted up in field & goalie gear, show them the basics & explain just the rules they needed to know. The kids really enjoyed all the tuition & after a couple of hours or so they were ready to compete for a trophy that Keith Allen had got made especially for this event.

The games were great fun to watch & everyone enjoyed themselves with the CBBC presenters Mark & Sam fooling around & interviewing. We did have to use a soft ball in all but the final game for safety reasons, as a lot of the kids had soft booted skates and the teams only had 3 players on the rink, with the oldest member of the team or a parent going in goal.

The street hockey team were the final winners in the end but only just as it was very close.

All the film, sound, technical & presenting crew said what a fantastic day it had been & that Letchworth RHC had been a credit to themselves & the club with the way it was all professionally put together at such short notice.

The programme will be put out on a Saturday morning sometime in June or July yet to be advised.

New Roller Hockey Rules

As previously mentioned for the season 09-10 the new CIRH rules will be adopted for Roller Hockey games within the UK (as annouced by the NRHA).

If you want to have a look for yourself which rules could (we’re not sure yet if all the new rules will be used) then you can check them out at the site for the Comite Europe de Rink Hockey.

I have only briefly glanced at them but some key chanegs appear to be the removal of yellow cards and the introduction of Power Play… one’s thing for sure though, this may take some getting used to by the players and referees alike.

Goodwood Roller Marathon

The Goodward Roller Marathon is this year taking place on the 9th of August and shall be raising money for the NSPCC. Vairous lengths of tracks can be undertaken including a “dual” marathon which is 22 laps of the great Goodwood circuit which works out to be 53.24 miles.

At least some of the members of Letchworth Roller Hockey club are planning on taking part so if you fancy joining them on the skate of fancy sponsoring them then watch this space for more details to come in the future or head over to the Goodwood Roller Marathon site.

National Cup Semi Final

On Wednesday 27th May Letchworth take on Bury in the National Cup semi final at the North Herts leisure centre in Letchworth. The game time has not yet been fixed but an estimate of 8pm has been placed for now.

Of course we’d like as many supporters as possible there to help us beat Bury and make the final so please please come along and watch some sexy hockey!

Intermediates Tournament 4th April 09

Three of our Intermediate players were part of the Eastern Counties Select Div 2 team that won three of there four games. First game they won 3-2 against HBU, second game they won 4-0 against Cottenham, third game they won 10-2 against Colchester & fourth game they narrowly lost 2-0 against second in the league table Cottenham.
Well done to Jake Mansfield, Adam Allinson & F.Childs who have helped the team to be currently top of the league.
