Seniors EC1 – 08/11/2009

Belated match report from the Seniors Easter Counties 1 tournament in Kings Lynn

Letchworth v Peterborough.

This was a game of 2 halves as the expression goes, but with a difference. The difference is that the 2 halves in question were our half and their half of the rink. In our half of the rink we played really well, defended consistently and controlled our area. But when it came to moving into the opponents half, our passes were sloppy, shots were off target and our movement off the ball was not good. We lost Nigel 6 minutes into the half with a torn calf muscle and conceded a goalmouth scramble scrappy goal. The rest of the game progressed in the same manner, Peterborough not penetrating our defence much at all and when they did we are lucky enough to have Ben playing and doing his normal excellent job at keeping the ball out of our net. But we still could not put the ball in their net

Final Score 1-0 to Peterborough.

Letchworth v Grimsby.

We came out fighting after our 1st game loss and really there was nothing in it between the 2 sides all first half even though Grimsby are a Premier League team. The half ended 1-1. In the second half it was an old style end to end game for the first ten minutes with both teams working the opposition goalkeepers. With 6 minutes to go the difference between EC1 and Premier league started to become more apparent, fitness. As we only had one sub due to Nigel not being able to play, we started to feel it and paid for the first ten minute end to end hockey. We conceded a goal to take it to 2-1 and then had to push a bit to claw it back, unfortunately pushing a team opens up holes in your own defence and we conceded 2 more.

Final Score 4-1 to Grimsby.

Letchworth v Kingslynn.

We started really well and went 2 goals up quite quickly and we finally got into our stride passing well, moving well and keeping the ball. Kingslynn scored and the half finished 2-1 to us. In the second half things changed for some unknown reason, maybe tiredness causing lapses of concentration, but we had a miscommunication in who was marking who and allowed Kingslynn to walk through the middle of our defence and score. 2-2. As the half progressed it was plain to see that we just were not fit enough and gave the ball away too easily to our downfall.

Final Score 4-2 to Kingslynn.

Not a good day at the office. We were all very disappointed after the tournament, I can’t remember the last time Letchworth lost 3 games in a row at senior level, but you learn by your mistakes.

We will be better in the next tournament.
