We played our second tournament of the season at Cambridge for Cottenham’s home tournament. Our first game was against the hosts who fielded a young team who hadn’t been playing very long together. Our team consisted of only 4 rink players, Kai Hayward, Mia Allen, Miguel Cox & Oli Marshall with Clara Cox in goal. This meant no substitutions all day due to a foot injury to Annie Jordon.
We started really well and full of confidence after winning all three games at our first tournament. Because Cottenham fielded a younger team they really were no match for our team and the final score was 14-0 with Clara only actually making one save late on in the second half, which was her only touch of the game.
Our second game was against Sudbury who we narrowly beat 2-1 last tournament. The game started really well as both teams had equal amounts if possession, attacking and defending. With the score still at 0-0, a Sudbury shot hit Miguel on the forearm which needed attention off rink and reduced us to three on rink for nearly 4 minutes, a third of the half. Although Oli, Mia & Kai did really well defending and helping Clara who made some excellent saves, by the time the feeling had come back into Miguel’s fingers and he could return to the rink we were 2 goals down. Also, due to the amount of hard work they had done skating and defending, they were already showing signs of tiredness. We didn’t really recover from that and the second half was very hard for all.
After a clumsy challenge from a Sudbury player splatting Kai into a wall and a retaliation from Kai understandably not taking very kindly to being squished, we were back down to three on rink for the final 4 minutes. We conceded goals even though Oli played like a trojan, Mia played her defensive socks off, Miguel tackled determinedly, with Clara again stopping everything she could. The Final Score was 5-0.
Our last game was against Ely and after a defeat it would have been easy for them all to lack confidence, but they came back fighting and dissected the Ely defence passing beautifully and scoring some of the best goals all day. Even though very tired, they all slogged out another fantastic win scoring 10 and only conceding 1.
All five players worked really hard through the highs of winning and the inevitable low of defeat, but came away knowing they had done their best. We hope Annie has a speedy recovery and is back ready to play in our third tournament on 24th Nov at Soham.

Saturday 22nd September – Sudbury
It was a nice leisurely start to the new season. A trip to Sudbury for a 10.15am start.
The whole team had a fantastic day with a clean sweep of 3 wins out of 3 games.
The first game against Walpole showed that shouting “pass” for the last 2 years hasn’t been wasted as it resulted in some brilliant moves and excellent goals. Annie and Mia were solid in defence along with Miguel marking and clearing the ball well. As usual, Clara was strong in goal and made some great saves. Ollie and Kai played together up front passing and finding space, it was a joy to behold and it paid dividends with them both scoring some stunning goals.
Result 17 – 1
With our first match under our belts we came out just as strong for the second match against Cottenham. Miguel and Mia pushed forward this time with Miguel constantly attacking their defence and with some more great passing Miguel was on the score sheet notching up 2 goals. Mia hit the post many times and had several shots saved. With Ollie, Kai and Annie holding defence, Claira much to her annoyance had very little to do.
Result 13 – 0
Our last game against Sudbury was much harder and used up what energy we had left. Sudbury started strong and pushed forward but Annie, Mia and Miguel held the defence well with some fantastic saves from Clara. Breaks from Kai and Ollie meant that the Sudbury keeper was kept busy with several shots on target. The score was 0 – 0 at half time. The second half started after an uplifting team talk by coach, Andy, and with a great pass from Annie out of defence to Ollie we were 1-0 ahead. Sudbury pulled 1 back but with 3 minutes left another well placed pass found Kai to make the score 2 – 1. What a close but great game.
Result 2 – 1
Well done to everyone you should be proud of yourselves and with team work and passing like that it should be a great season.
A big thanks to Paul for being team ref on the day and a big thanks to Andy for coaching with passion.

We had our first U11 tournament today in Sudbury. The Letchworth team was
1 – Clara Cox (GK)
2 – Annie Jordan
4 – Miguel Cox
5 – Oli Marshall
6 – Mia Allen
8 – Kai Hayward
Our first game was against Walpole.
We started with Clara , Annie & Mia in defence, Kai & Oli up front & Miguel on the bench.
The game started well and it was very obvious to all watching that our 2 years of experience playing in this league was paying big dividends. The game was a pretty one sided affair in our favour & with the three girls playing brilliantly in defence and the three boys doing a masterful job at the other end allowing us to control the game.
The first half finished with us 9 goals up.
We were scoring some good individual goals, but needed to pass more in the final third to score better team goals. So midway through the second half I restricted Kia & Oli to three touch hockey, which is normally a training exercise. This was to get more passing as we didn’t really need more goals. To my surprise though, during this period of playing three touch and having to pass the ball more, the team actually scored almost half the goals of the final result.
But credit to Walpole who upped their game and put a lot of pressure on us in defence which culminated in a really good shot being scored past our unsighted keeper. We responded very quickly from the centre and controlled the rest of the game. The girls did an amazing job and tackled well, passing the ball quickly out of defence which allowed the boys to go on this goal scoring spree.
The goals were scored by all three boys with Miguel scoring his first ever competitive goal.
The game finished – Letchworth 17 – 1 Walpole
Letchworth V Cottenham.
We started with Clara, Oli & Mia in defence, Kai & Miguel up front & Annie on the bench.
This game showed that there was a new confidence growing within the team after the first match. The first half saw some of the best teamwork we have produced, with the ball being passed to and from the entire team. One moment came after another great save from Clara, she made the save and cleared it to the corner where Annie got it and passed down the line to Oli. He dribbled around an opponent with a little chip of the ball over the incoming stick and a burst of speed, while Kia sprinted left & Mia right. He then passed to Mia as she skated backwards and she took a touch and then passed it straight back to him splitting Cottenham’s defence apart, he then passed first time through the hole created in the defence to Kai who slapped the ball, again first time, beating the keeper. A really well worked team goal!
Clara was not called on much but really did well to keep her concentration for the few occasions that she was needed. Final score Letchworth 13 – 0 Cottenham. Our first ever clean sheet!!
Last game and potentially hardest game of the day was against a good home team, Sudbury.
We started with Clara , Annie & Mia in defence, Kai & Oli up front & Miguel on the bench.
We again started very well and within minutes managed to hit the post a few times and an open goal at one point. The two teams were very evenly matched and was exciting end to end stuff, but somehow the score line was 0-0 for the entire first half. This was mainly down to both teams goalkeepers working very hard to keep the ball out.
The second half started as the first had finished, fast and frantic, with a break through coming with an well read interception by Oli, he stole the ball from between two of the Sudbury players, dribbled another having finally found a hole in the Sudbury defence, then he belted it past the keeper. 1-0.
By now tired legs were starting to show and some mistimed tackles by both teams halted the game a couple of times as players were helped back to their feet. But Sudbury weren’t done and came back at us with everything they had and after defending well we got the ball and started a counter attack. But we were stopped in our tracks by a really good tackle just outside our own half leaving Annie left to defend against two players. She did all she could but a good pass left Clara in a one-on-one situation with probably Sudbury’s best player. The shot came in and Clara made a valiant effort but couldn’t stop it. 1-1.
With just 6 minutes left, the game started to hit fever pitch with both teams attacking, defending and counter attacking! Again both goalkeepers worked really hard to keep goals out and Clara pulled of two or three fantastic saves. But then, with just a few minutes to go, Sudbury broke through on another one-on-one with Clara and it was the same player as before. This time the result was the other way around though as Clara made her best save of the day!
Mia cleared the ball quickly to Kai, who controlled it and passed a immediate ball through to Oli. By this time all the players were very tired and had to dig very deep to carry on. Oli still had lots to do and went at the last Sudbury defender. As normal I was shouting instructions for him to pass square to Kai who was in a good position to receive the ball, but de to the noise of the hockey and crowd, he didn’t hear me, went round the defender, wound up and hit another absolute rocket of a shot & scored!! (I was very glad he didn’t hear me). 2-1.
The game stayed manic for the remainder of the game with Mia & Annie being a wall of defence to stop Sudbury and the boys running their legs off. Thankfully due to their hard work the score stayed the same, so we had our very first tournament with three wins and includes six ecstatic children & lots of exhausted parents and a coach with a sore throat!!
I am really proud of them all today and they should be very proud of themselves and their team.
We still have lots to work on, but as today has shown me, they are all getting so much better.
It’s a great age group to be involved with.
Quote of the day came from 9 year old Clara, who said to me with a big grin on her face as we were just about to start the second half of the Cottenham game ‘I have the taste of victory in my mouth’! I was laughing all the way to the dug out! Bless!
